FAQ
Common questions about brokers and agents
What is the difference between an insurance broker and an insurance agent in Ontario?
In Ontario, an independent insurance broker is licensed by RIBO and represents the client — not any single insurer. They compare products from multiple carriers. A captive agent is licensed to sell for one specific insurance company only. Brokers are legally required to act in your best interest; agents are required to act in their employer insurer's interest. BrokerUnion is an independent broker — not affiliated with any carrier.
Is it cheaper to use an insurance broker in Ontario?
Using an independent broker is typically the same cost or less than going direct. Brokers are compensated by the carrier (not the client) through commissions built into the premium. The broker's ability to compare 50+ carriers often results in lower premiums than a single-carrier agent or direct insurer can offer for equivalent coverage. There is no broker fee at BrokerUnion.
What does RIBO-licensed mean for an Ontario insurance broker?
A RIBO-licensed broker has passed the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario licensing examination, maintains continuing education requirements, and is bound by RIBO's Code of Professional Conduct — including a legal duty to act in the client's best interest. RIBO can discipline, fine, or revoke the licence of any broker who violates the Code. You can verify any broker's licence at ribo.com.
Should I use an independent broker or buy insurance direct online in Ontario?
For most Ontario residents — especially those with a home, multiple vehicles, or any business activity — an independent broker provides better value. A broker asks questions that reveal coverage gaps an online form misses, explains Ontario's complex auto accident benefit options, and advocates for you when claims are disputed. For simple situations, direct online purchasing can work, but you will have no advocate at claim time.
